Ghana is venturing into the world of night tourism with the official launch of the “Accra by Night” initiative.
The experience is designed to unveil the lively, colourful, and soulful side of Ghana’s capital.
In her remarks at the launch, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie described the initiative as “an exciting addition to Ghana’s growing tourism offerings and a true celebration of our city’s distinct energy, culture, and creativity.”
She noted that while Accra thrives during the day, its night-time persona is equally enchanting, filled with music, the aroma of street food, and the undeniable warmth of the Ghanaian spirit.
What travellers can expect
During the launch, the Minister embarked on a tour through the city’s historic and cultural landmarks. It kicked off at 8 p.m. from the Ghana Tourism Information Centre, with stops that included:
- Independence Avenue and the Ministries enclave
- Jamestown Lighthouse
- Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum
- Nationalism Park
- Osu Night Market
More than just a tour
The “Accra by Night” tourism initiative is a platform to showcase Ghana’s creative economy in full swing. As Minister Gomashie explained, the initiative goes beyond a typical city tour by giving exposure to artists, entertainers, vendors, and service providers who work during the night.
It also supports His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s vision of a 24-hour economy, which seeks to promote round-the-clock economic activity and attract diverse opportunities for both locals and visitors.
This aligns well with global trends in tourism, where cities like Tokyo, Dubai, and Barcelona have seen significant economic benefits from developing a thriving night-time economy.

Why a night economy matters
For the local economy, it creates jobs, supports small businesses, and keeps the creative arts alive and visible. For travellers, a night economy means more flexibility and more experiences to choose from after the sun sets.
Tourists heading to Ghana can look forward to regularly scheduled tours, collaborations with local artists, themed night events, and more.
