Egypt’s pyramids are getting a $51 million revamp

For centuries, the Pyramids of Giza have fascinated travellers from around the world. It is one of the most recognisable landmarks on the planet, attracting millions each year. Now, Egypt is investing $51 million to make this destination more accessible and enjoyable for future visitors, while addressing areas that have sometimes presented challenges.

Led by Orascom Pyramids Entertainment Services, the revamp includes several upgrades designed to make this location more accessible and create a more welcoming atmosphere. For example, a new entrance has been opened along the Fayoum Highway to reduce traffic at the previously crowded entry point near the historic Marriott Mena House Hotel.

Naguib Sawiris, founder of Orascom Investment Holding, highlighted the core vision behind these changes. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he shared, “We’re working to preserve one of the world’s most important cultural landmarks while ensuring a better and more respectful experience for all.”

Private vehicles and large tour buses will also now stop at designated areas, with 45 electric buses operating every five minutes to shuttle visitors around the site. These eco-friendly buses are in part to support sustainable tourism, but also to give tourists a more relaxed and spacious way to explore the area.

A better experience for all

While many travellers have had unforgettable moments at the pyramids—riding camels against a golden sunset or standing face-to-face with the Sphinx—there have also been concerns over the years about overcrowding and unregulated vendor activity.

This project aims to address those issues more thoughtfully, ensuring that every visitor, whether it’s their first time or fifth, can enjoy the experience without pressure or confusion. A new visitor centre and an online ticketing system are also on the way to help reduce queues and make planning smoother.

Several tombs are set to undergo restoration, adding even more cultural depth to the site and offering returning visitors something new to explore.

A step forward

The Pyramids of Giza have always been an incredible destination. What this project hopes to do is enhance the magic. For travellers who’ve visited before, it’s a chance to return and see what’s new. And for those still planning their first trip, it’s shaping up to be even more inspiring.
