Air Tanzania launches direct flights from Nigeria to Tanzania

Air Tanzania has announced a new direct flight between Dar es Salaam and Lagos. The first flight will take off on August 15, 2025, and the journey will last just four hours. This is much shorter than the long connecting flights travellers used before.

In the past, flying between Nigeria and Tanzania often meant going through cities like Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or even Dubai. This new route makes travel faster, easier, and more convenient for tourists, businesspeople, and anyone moving between both countries.

The route was playfully unveiled in a viral video by Nigerian social media star, Priscilla Ojo and Tanzanian musician, Juma Jux, who appeared in pilot uniforms to symbolise a new chapter of cultural unity, love, business, and creativity between both nations.

The launch follows key diplomatic talks in April

This direct route comes after a Tanzanian delegation led by Judica Elfadhili Nagunwa, Head of Chancery at the Tanzanian High Commission, met Nigeria’s Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo in Abuja in April.

During the meeting, Tanzanian officials formally proposed that Air Tanzania begin direct flights to Nigeria to boost trade, tourism, and people‑to‑people connections. Minister Keyamo welcomed the idea, citing it as aligned with the government’s priority to expand Nigeria’s aviation network and foster intra‑African cooperation.

Both sides agreed to continue close engagement between their respective aviation authorities to fast‑track regulatory approvals and sort operational logistics.

What this means for tourism between both nations

This new direct air link further strengthens the already vibrant ties between Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Nigeria. It will make travel more accessible and efficient for tourists eager to explore Tanzania’s rich offerings, but will also facilitate greater business interactions and cultural exchanges. As a result, both countries can expect increased tourism, trade partnerships, business networking, and cultural collaboration.
