
Africa prepares for 2nd gastronomy tourism forum
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Basque Culinary Center, and the government of Tanzania will host the 2nd Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa.
The event will take place from March 11-13, 2025, in the coastal city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It will bring together global and regional experts to discuss how Africa’s culinary diversity can benefit local communities and promote sustainability.
The UNWTO defines gastronomy tourism as travel centred on food and related experiences. With food tourism gaining momentum worldwide, the forum will focus on positioning Africa as a competitive player in this growing sector.
According to a 2022 report by the World Food Travel Association, 34% of tourists choose destinations for their cuisine.
Regions like Southeast Asia and the Americas have capitalized on this trend, attracting millions of food lovers. Africa, however, remains untapped despite its rich culinary heritage and abundant resources.

Africa’s culinary potential
Africa’s food is as diverse as its people. Staples like jollof rice, sadza, and injera often spark debates over which country makes the best.
However, the continent has not yet harnessed this diversity to draw food-focused tourists. Instead, the continent is better known for its safaris, natural beauty, beaches, and afro-entertainment.
This missed opportunity is something the forum hopes to address. “This forum aims to harness the power of gastronomy tourism for the benefit of local communities and the environment,” UNWTO said in a statement.
Some countries, like South Africa, have already made progress. Cape Town’s renowned vineyards draw many wine lovers each year.
Building on the first edition
The first Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa was held in Zimbabwe in 2024. It brought together industry leaders to discuss challenges and opportunities for promoting African cuisine.
The event showcased Africa’s culinary diversity. Initiatives like the Gastronomy Pitch Challenge highlighted entrepreneurial solutions to enhance gastronomy and tourism.
Other highlights included the Youth Photo Contest Awards and the appointment of UN Africa Tourism Ambassadors from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.

What to expect in 2025
The second edition in Dar es Salaam will focus on knowledge exchange to grow gastronomy tourism in Africa.
Dar es Salaam, known for its rich food scene, is the ideal setting for these discussions.
This forum offers hope for a new chapter in African tourism. Travellers may soon visit not just for the sights but for the flavours, stories, and traditions that make Africa unique.
