Kenya launches new chapter in adventure tourism
Kenya has taken a bold step towards redefining its position as a global hub for adventure tourism with the launch of the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series.
Jointly unveiled by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Athletics Kenya (AK), this initiative is designed to highlight the country’s spectacular landscapes while diversifying its tourism offerings beyond the renowned wildlife safaris.
The series kicked off on Monday with the Heritage Trails Expedition and Barngetuny Run, a five-day event that commenced at Thomson Falls in Laikipia County.
The journey, which features hiking, biking, cultural immersions, and farm tours across five counties, will conclude with the Barngetuny Mountain Run in Nandi County on Saturday, January 18. These activities are strategically planned to underscore Kenya’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and elite athletic heritage.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano emphasised the transformative potential of such events, noting their dual role as training grounds for Kenya’s world-class athletes and as platforms to promote the country’s global standing in mountain and trail running.
Speaking at the launch, she highlighted the broader vision: “This series is not just about adventure. It’s about showcasing Kenya’s prowess in the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships and attracting adventure travellers to experience the unique blend of sport and nature that our country offers.”

Broadening Kenya’s tourism horizon
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, contributing significantly to national revenue. While the country is globally recognised for its Big Five safaris and wildlife reserves, initiatives like the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series aim to position Kenya as a leading destination for sports and adventure tourism.
This strategy aligns with the government’s ambition to attract 200,000 adventure travellers within the next five years.
Kenya’s reputation as a powerhouse of elite runners makes this diversification all the more fitting.
By leveraging its athletic legacy and stunning terrains, the country is well-poised to appeal to a growing global audience seeking active, immersive travel experiences.
A year-long adventure calendar
The ongoing Heritage Trails Expedition and Barngetuny Run is just the beginning. The Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series will feature a robust calendar of events throughout the year.
Upcoming highlights include Nyamira Great Run in May, Mount Kenya Mountain Run in June, the Aberdare’s Trail Run in August, the Mount Longonot in November, and the Mount Elgon Run in December.
